This western part, also called Bãi Cháy (or Bai Chay), is the animated tourism zone. Neon signs blaze out at night along the Bai Chay waterfront, advertising north Vietnam's most developed resort, whose main business is boat cruising tours around the bay . Hon Gai, on the other hand, is a bustling working harbor.

Ha Long City, formerly the Hon Gai Town, is the cultural, economic and political center of Quang Ninh Province. The city is divided into two parts: Hon Gai on the East side and Bai Chay, on the West of Halong city. The Eastern part is an industrial zone where most of the province's official buildings are also concentrated.

In 1994, Hòn Gai and Bãi Cháy were amalgamated into Ha Long City, but locals still stick to the old names - as does minibus - since this is a useful way to distinguish between the two former towns, which lies on either side of narrow Cua Luc channel. The western side of Halong city is also called Bai Chay, is the animated tourism zone.

Theo truyền thuyết xưa, Bãi Cháy chính Giặc Nguyên Mông do Ô mã Nhi với trên 300 chiến thuyền và Trương Văn Hổ với 100 thuyền lương đã sa vào trận Bạch Đằng, bị Trần Khánh Dư cùng quân dân nhà Trần thiêu cháy và bị dạt vào bờ. Do nhiều thuyền giặc bị cháy, gió đông bắc lại thổi tạt lửa vào bờ phía tây Cửa Lục làm cháy luôn khu rừng đang hanh khô. Khu rừng bị cháy đó thành Bãi Cháy ngày nay.

The "Bai Chay Bridge", spanning a strait within sight of Ha Long Bay, Vietnam’s premier UNESCO World Heritage site, has the world’s longest center span length of 435 m, as a single plane cable-stayed prestressed concrete bridge, with a bridge length of 903m.

Cầu Bãi Cháy có chiều dài toàn cầu là 903m, trong đó chiều dài nhịp chính 435m, chiều rộng toàn cầu 25,3m, gồm bốn làn xe cơ giới và hai làn xe thô sơ, người đi bộ. Tĩnh không thông thuyền của cầu là 50m chiều cao và 130m chiều rộng, đảm bảo cho tàu có trọng tải 40.000 tấn qua lại thuận tiện. Đường dẫn lên cầu là đường đô thị cấp 2 dài 5km, có tám cầu dẫn với tổng chiều dài 1,172km, cầu có khả năng chịu đựng được động đất cấp 7.

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Quảng Ninh province, Vietnam. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. Ha Long Bay as of May 18, 2008 is the current top 77 Official Nominees to become a New Seven Wonder of Nature. The current top 5 Nominees are Ha Long Bay (Vietnam), Cox's Bazar Beach (Bangladesh), Ganges River (India, Bangladesh), Amazon River/Forest (Bolivia, Brazil, Comlumbia, Ecuador, Peru, South America) and Mount Everest, Mountain (Nepal).
